Japan lost the memory-chip war of the 1990s and never built a rival to TSMC or NVIDIA — and yet no advanced chip on Earth gets made without Japanese companies. Japan holds roughly 30% of the global semiconductor equipment market (second only to the US), over 90% of advanced photoresist, and over half of the world's silicon wafers. That's a supply-chain chokehold, not a consumer brand — which is why these names are less famous than their market positions deserve.

Why Domestic Demand Is Back
For decades these companies sold their tools and materials mostly to fabs outside Japan. That's changing. Rapidus, the government-backed foundry venture, started its 2nm pilot line in Hokkaido in April 2025 with IBM-co-developed transistor technology, targeting volume production from late fiscal 2027 — and is now adding an advanced-packaging pilot line. TSMC's Kumamoto operation (JASM) began volume production at its first fab in late 2024, broke ground on a second fab in October 2025 (~$13.9 billion), and in February 2026 TSMC said that second fab would be upgraded to 3nm-class production — a first for Japan. Government subsidies for the two Kumamoto fabs alone total up to ¥1.2 trillion.
Whether or not Rapidus succeeds commercially, the equipment installs, cleanroom buildouts and materials qualification runs are near-term revenue for the companies below.

US symbols are OTC lines. Advantest (ATEYY) runs a company-maintained sponsored ADR program dating from its former NYSE listing; the rest are unsponsored ADRs or foreign-ordinary (F) shares created by depositary banks without company involvement — Shin-Etsu, notably, has publicly stated it does not support its unsponsored program. Expect wider spreads and thin volume versus Tokyo.
The Materials Chokepoint: Photoresist
Photoresist — the light-sensitive chemical that patterns every circuit layer — is the single most concentrated Japanese position in the chip supply chain. Five Japanese companies (JSR, Tokyo Ohka, Shin-Etsu, Sumitomo Chemical and Fujifilm) supply roughly 95% of EUV resist, the grade used at the most advanced nodes. Tokyo Ohka is the world's largest resist maker overall (24.7% share — #1 in KrF, #2 in EUV at 28.0%), while JSR leads ArF immersion resist with roughly 30%; by JSR's own count, about a third of the world's chips are made with its materials.

This grip briefly became geopolitics. In July 2019 Japan moved exports to South Korea of three items — fluorinated polyimide, hydrogen fluoride and photoresist — from blanket licenses to case-by-case approval. It was narrower than the "export ban" headlines: for resist, the individual-license requirement in practice covered only EUV-grade material (under 1% of resist shipments to Korea by volume), the first license cleared in about five weeks, and Samsung also drew EUV resist through JSR's Belgian joint venture with imec — Korean chip output never stopped. The measures were unwound in March 2023, the day South Korea withdrew its WTO complaint. What the episode did prove is that advanced lithography runs on a handful of Japanese chemistry suppliers — which is why the world still searches "Japan" and "photoresist" together.

Share figures are Fuji Chimera Research estimates for 2024 shipment volume (as disclosed by Tokyo Ohka) and JSR's own investor materials; they shift by year and counting method. FUJIY and SOMMY are unsponsored ADR lines, like most symbols on this page. JSR remains unlisted as of August 2026 — in May 2026 Reuters reported that JIC was weighing a sale, naming Fujifilm and Mitsubishi Chemical as interested parties, but nothing is decided.
The ETF Route
The Global X Japan Semiconductor ETF (2644) on the Tokyo Stock Exchange tracks roughly 38 Japanese chip names (recent top holdings: Renesas, Tokyo Electron, Lasertec) and passed ¥1 trillion in assets in 2026 — one of the biggest thematic ETF success stories in Tokyo. It trades in yen on the TSE. We can't confirm any US-listed Japan-only semiconductor ETF; US funds like SMH are dominated by US names, with Tokyo Electron typically a small weight. ⚠ The Risks Specific to This Group
- This is a deeply cyclical industry. Equipment and wafer orders swing hard with fab capex cycles — these stocks have historically drawn down 40–60% in downcycles, AI narrative or not.
- China exposure cuts both ways. China has been a major revenue source for Japanese equipment makers; tightening export controls (or Chinese retaliation against Japanese materials) can remove chunks of demand with little warning.
- Rapidus is an execution bet, not a certainty. A government-backed latecomer targeting 2nm against TSMC and Samsung is historically unprecedented; supplier revenue tied to it could disappoint.
- Valuations already price leadership. Names like Lasertec and Disco have traded at premium multiples for years; the monopoly positions are well known.
- Access friction. Unsponsored OTC lines trade thin, and dual symbols (SCRNY/DINRF, TOKCF/TKCYY) can confuse order entry.

Q. Which Japanese semiconductor stocks have US ADRs?
TOELY, ATEYY, DSCSY, LSRCY, SHECY, SUOPY, RNECY, SCRNY and ROHCY all trade OTC in the US; Tokyo Ohka trades as the foreign-ordinary line TOKCF. Only Advantest's program is sponsored by the company itself.
Q. Can I invest in Rapidus directly?
No — it's unlisted. Public-market exposure runs through suppliers: the equipment makers (Tokyo Electron, SCREEN, Disco) and materials makers (Shin-Etsu, SUMCO, Tokyo Ohka) on this page.
Q. Can I still invest in JSR, the photoresist leader?
No. JSR — the ArF resist leader and owner of EUV pioneer Inpria — was taken private by JIC, Japan's state-backed investment fund, in a roughly ¥904 billion tender and delisted from Tokyo Prime on June 25, 2024. It remains unlisted as of August 2026. Listed photoresist exposure runs through Tokyo Ohka (4186.T / TOKCF), Shin-Etsu (4063.T / SHECY), Sumitomo Chemical (4005.T / SOMMY) and Fujifilm (4901.T / FUJIY).
Q. Why not just buy the US equipment names instead?
You can — but the niches differ. Coater/developers, EUV mask inspection, dicing/grinding, wafers and advanced resist are positions the US names largely don't occupy. That's the specific exposure this list offers.
